Introduction

ANES - Associação Nacional de Esterilização, the Portuguese National Association for Sterilization was established in 1997 with the following objectives:

• To promote good practice for the prevention and control of infection transmission through the centralization of Sterilization Services.
• To disseminate European and International Standards related to the correct use and re-use of medical devices produced for multiple use.
• To collaborate with the Ministry of Health in developing national guidelines.
• To promote education of professionals working in Sterilization services in all Health Care Institutions.

ANES has 200 members, mostly nurses but also including doctors, hospital administrators and pharmacists. Amongst its activities is the annual organization of a National Conference.
