Hi there i am a cssd operator and had previousely work for the South Africa government where i work for Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. I normally search for new information on the cssd practises and i have found was your site excellent. Interesting to read your comment! I don't agree with this. Decontamination & Sterilising is a specialised field in itself. I certainly wouldn't be able to do a nurses role & I wouldn't expect that they could do mine...

When my wife had a VP Shunt procedure done at the University Hospital, The nurse
told us that the surgical set they used was not "Sterile" She was given antibiotics and the hospital delayed her discharge an extra 3 days later.
It was still infected later nonetheless and the surgical procedure had to be repeated. The Surgical procedure cost $15,000 each time it was done, I lost my good paying job with benefits due to "attendance" issues and we filed bankruptcy.
The Nurse was put in an awkward position when I told her that I work in Sterile Processing when she informed us of the above event, She promptly left and informed Sterile Processing Department at the University Hospital and Risk Management.
The Steam Sterilizer isn’t a warmer for the at Annual at Work Thanksgiving Buffet,
It is the heartbeat and soul of the entire hospital affecting the patient’s health, and the quality of care our nurses and doctors give their patients in our hospital.
We’re certified technicians that have demonstrated our competency and are qualified to fill this critical position, We took the certification test and passed and maintain that certification. When OR Nurses don’t check the parameters of the flash sterilizers, it is because they trust us to verify that it was checked during the night and it passed the necessary criteria before allowing it to be in service. We run our steam sterilizers in our department, We should have every advantage to accomplishing sterility. The Steam Sterilizer isn’t a catch all safety net, it has parameters to be attained, met and maintained.
Surgical Sets maintain sterility during transport and storage whether it is wrapped or in a container, Both Event Related and Time Parameters affect sterility in storage and transport. Sets are not airport luggage, but fragile gifts for our loved ones for this ominous event affecting their "Health" It needs to be checked for the load stickers, load label, punctures, cracks before we release it to the patient‘s caregiver who is trusting us to do. The Biological Indicator needs to be checked before the set is released if it is an implant.
I do support the movement that mandates that we all be Certified, but at a minimum, Certified Personnel should be required to run Sterilization devices whether it be: Steam, Sterrad, Sterris, Ozone and EtO. The Steam Sterilizer position is a very busy position, that includes keeping OR Posted as to when they may get the sterilized item and not vice versa.
The consequences are real life situations that could have been prevented, Only our certified employees should be working in this position. We deliver a "Sterile" Product.

When Mary Deane first told me .... now I can see, it is working. The internet is the important tool of communication, information and EDUCATION. A European education for Sterile Supply is underway, meanwhile like Wim Renders and Toni Zanette told me. Congratulations! Any kind of business depends on the persons involved. What I see is an urgent need of structure for any kind of academy. What is the content? Do we follow the 3 step structure of the German education? How many days are necessary, is there a written paper at the end of the highes education level? Where do we find the lecturers and teachers? What are the rules of the support of companies? Many people in CSSD are waiting for the right answers, no matter where they come from. We need a European approach and communication with the national societies. Any activities should be welcomed and we should inform each other about it. The EFHSS platform seems to be an ideal ground, isn´t it?
